Kindra Steenerson is originally from Southern California, but currently resides in Charlotte, NC. She earned her MFA in Performance/Directing from Utah State University, where her training was largely informed by Stanislavsky, Adler, and Bogart’s Viewpoints. As a professional she has extensively studied Meisner, physical approaches to acting (Laban, Viewpoints/Suzuki, and Rasaboxes), and has trained with both Catherine Fitzmaurice and Anne Bogart/SITI Company in NY. Locally, Kindra appeared as The Angel in Angels in America at Carolina Actors Studio Theatre in Charlotte, and most recently as Jennifer Jones in Lee Street’s production of The Realistic Joneses. Other favorite roles include Hecuba in The Trojan Women, Lady Caroline in Enchanted April, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods. She has directed upwards of fifty shows, and counts Talley's Folly, On the Verge, Spring Awakening, The Laramie Project, Southern Girls, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Hairspray, and The Cake among her recent favorites.

Kindra has spent the last twenty years in academia, teaching in Theatre and Gender and Women's Studies programs in Arizona, Illinois, and North Carolina. She earned tenure and promotion at Coker College in South Carolina, where she was an Associate Professor of Theatre.

Kindra’s research interests are using physical theatre to heal trauma, Meisner, feminist theory and pedagogy, and how to use theatre techniques to engage in community dialogue around difficult topics. Kindra has presented papers and workshops at state, regional, national, and international conferences. In addition to her work as Executive director of SAGE Acts, she is a part-time theatre instructor, freelance actor and director, and works as a consultant to higher ed theatre programs and theatre companies.

On Diversity and Empathy Building in the Classroom/Studio

I’ve felt myself become a less judgmental person ever since that day, having realized from observing all the personal stories spilling forth…that you can never tell what’s going on in other people’s lives. I also realized with that day that through being true to myself, regardless of the potential consequences, my very existence could inspire others to accept their own identities.

    On Personal Style

For some reason, the moment I met you I felt like I knew you. It seemed that I could see right through to your soul. You are so beautifully transparent. I love your sense of humor and the fact that you choose to be kind whenever you can. That's not always an easy choice.

    On education

Kindra Steenerson is one of the best professors I have had. She always comes to class prepared with incredibly creative scene ideas for us and they always make me think critically and creatively. I love the energy she brings into the classroom and she makes me feel valid in my ideas while still giving constructive feedback. She gave us actually well thought out assignments and was fully attentive to us. She made us all feel safe and welcome to share any ideas or thoughts that we had. I think that Kindra really knows what she is talking about and she had so many cool experiences to share with us about directing in a professional theatre setting.

I think Kindra has done an absolutely fantastic job! She is intelligent, engaging, encouraging, and experienced. She always gave clear and constructive criticism, and I was constantly excited to have class with her. The assignments she gave us were very helpful and encouraged me to think in new ways. She was also just fun and inviting to talk to, and she fostered a great in-class atmosphere for discussion. I would love for her to return as a professor or guest director in the near future if possible.
